Missing Cat Ad Tips, FAQ's

Question: What should I not include in my missing cat ad?
Answer: Including any of the following in your missing cat ad is optional or not recommended. The decision of what to include or omit is always yours.
It is not recommended you publicize whether or not your female cat is spayed. Even a vet may find it difficult to determine if a cat is spayed. Advertising that your cat is spayed, may make it more attractive to people wanting a cat. Advertising your female cat is whole, may garner negative attention from people against cat breeding, or may make your cat more attractive to people wanting to breed a cat. Trivia: a spayed female cat is called a molly, and a breeding female cat is called a queen.
If your male cat is neutered, you may wish to publicize it. A neutered male cat will look physically different than a whole male. A neutered cat can sometimes be mistaken for a female cat. As with a spayed female, a neutered cat may make your cat more attractive to people wanting a cat. Trivia: a whole male is called a tom, and a neutered male is called a gib.
You may or may not wish to identify your missing cat as microchipped. Sometimes microchip readers can not read the chip or the chip fails. This could cause your found cat to be identified as not microchipped and decided by the finder that it is not your cat. If someone knows they have a microchipped cat, it could also cause your cat to be dumped.
If your cat is sick or requires medication, you may wish to acknowledge this in your ad. Some organizations recommend saying this anyway, in case it helps your found cat to be turned in. If this is untrue, we do not recommend lying about your cat. This could either cause someone to abandon your cat, or determine the found cat could not be yours. It's better to be as honest as possible about your missing cat.
Question: Whom should I contact about my missing cat?
Answer: You should contact the following as soon as possible:
Any known local shelter or rescue that might impound or house a found cat. Recovered cats are typically only kept for a very limited time, before they are euthanized or rehomed. Sometimes neighbouring municipalities accept found and captured cats, so it is always a good idea to also contact other organizations in your or your neighbouring region or county. These organizations may display found pet reports online for a limited period. Example: City of Toronto, Stray Animals Report (current to 5 days).
+++ News article, Toronto Sun (2022): Family's 17yo male black cat, euthanized 5 days after he went missing in Toronto.
+++
Your cat's vet, and any other local veterinarians who can be made aware that your cat is missing. If a new cat comes in, matching your cat's description, the vet can also scan for a microchip.
If your cat is microchipped, whatever organization that keeps track of the microchip information, should be informed that the cat is missing, and you should verify that your current contact details are correct or update information if able. If you don't know whom to contact, you may be able to enter your microchip information to find your microchip recovery registry. You will need the microchip identification number. Example: American Animal Hospital Association pet microchip lookup tool.
Any neighbours and/or friends who know you and/or your cat. Word-of-mouth works better than anything, and these people can keep eyes out for your missing cat.
*~ We are sorry your cat is missing and hope s/he is found safe and soon!! ~*
